Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka Defeat Afghanistan to Enter Super Fours, Bangladesh Also Qualify

Sri Lanka secured their spot in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four stage with a six-wicket win over Afghanistan, knocking their opponents out of the tournament. The victory also confirmed Bangladesh’s qualification, joining India and Pakistan as the four semifinalists.

Chasing 170, opener Kusal Mendis led Sri Lanka’s charge with a match-winning 74 off 52 balls. His composed knock, supported by Kamindu Mendis’ quick cameo of 13-ball 22, sealed the win with eight balls to spare.

Earlier, Afghanistan staged a dramatic recovery from 79-6 in the 13th over, thanks to a stunning innings by Mohammad Nabi (60 off 22). Nabi smashed five consecutive sixes off Dunith Wellalage in the final over, propelling Afghanistan to 169/8. However, his efforts went in vain as Sri Lanka chased down the target comfortably. Nuwan Thushara shone with the ball, taking 4/18.

With this result, Afghanistan bow out of the tournament, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan progress to the Super Four stage. The next phase begins on 20 September, with Sri Lanka facing Bangladesh, followed by the much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash in Dubai on 21 September. The Asia Cup 2025 Final is scheduled for 28 September in Dubai.
